According to a report from Football.London, Tottenham Hotspur left-back Sergio Reguilon is being sent back from Atletico Madrid after an unsuccessful loan spell at Wanda Metropolitano. It is understood that the Spanish defender was sent out on loan last summer after Antonio Conte made it prevalent that he will not be included in his plans for this campaign. However, after failing to establish himself in the match-day squad and returning to form, Diego Simeone has decided to send him back.

Reguilon’s Decent Run Of Form In Premier League Football Last Season

Reguilon is having an impressive campaign in English football after producing a handful of solid displays on the left side of Tottenham’s midfield. The Spanish talent has registered two goals and three assists in 29 matches for Spurs this season in all competitions.

The 25-year-old has given a good account of himself by averaging 1.6 tackles, 1.3 interceptions, 1.7 clearances, 0.9 shots, 1.3 key passes and 0.8 dribbles per 90 minutes in the Premier League. He has even taken care of possession after making 79.6% of his attempted passes in the English top flight (stats via whoscored).

Compared to the previous season Regulian has only made five appearances for Atletico Madrid in the current campaign after recovering from his injuries. However, he has failed to be productive on the field both on the attacking front and the defensive end.

What Should Tottenham Hotspur Boss Antonio Conte Do In Regards To His Future?

Reguilon has previously proven his worth as a decent defender inside his half. He can get stuck in with some solid tackles and is usually quick to spot the danger on the defensive end of the field. The Spain international can create some decent chances for others around him and is also a good dribbler down the left flank. He can even deliver a few inviting crosses into the opposition penalty box.

At 25, Reguilon has a lot of room for improvement, so the North London giants should think about retaining his services for the long run. The Spaniard’s current contract at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is set to expire in the summer of 2025. Thus, there is no immediate need for the Lilywhites to cash in on him at the end of this season. With all things considered, Conte would be wise to not let Reguilon leave when the transfer window reopens later this year as he could prove to be a decent cover for the full-back positions.
