In a recent report, Calciomercato mentioned that Aston Villa could face stiff competition for River Plate striker Julian Alvarez. It is understood that the Villans will have to rival Tottenham Hotspur, Sevilla, AC Milan, Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund in pursuit of the Argentine forward.
Alvarez’s Impressive Run Of Form In Argentine Football
The Calchin-born sensation has come through the youth ranks of River Plate and deserves credit for establishing himself as an influential member of their senior team. The 21-year-old has made 85 appearances for the Argentine club, scoring 23 goals and providing 21 assists in multiple competitions.
The two-time Argentina international has enjoyed a decent run of form for his current employers of late as he has banged in seven goals and provided four assists in 11 matches for them so far. Alvarez has caught the eye by averaging 2.6 shots, 1.5 key passes, 1.0 crosses and 2.1 dribbles per 90 minutes in Liga Profesional. He has even been tidy when distributing possession in the final third after he completed 71.2% of his attempted passes in the Argentine top-flight (stats via whoscored).
Alvarez is good enough to keep the likes of Danny Ings and Ollie Watkins on their toes in the race to secure a regular starting spot at Aston Villa next season.
What Will The Argentine Striker Add To Dean Smith’s Side?
Alvarez has already begun to show what he is capable of in Argentine football. At 21, he has become a real favorite among the River Plate fans because of his goal-scoring prowess and creativity deep inside the opponent’s half.
The Argentine youngster can use his quickness and agility to make a few dangerous runs with the ball out on the flanks. Alvarez packs a lot of power with his shot attempts and can be a threat from set-pieces as well. However, it remains to be seen whether he can maintain his good form in the Premier League where he will be tested both physically and emotionally if he decides to join the Villans someday.
At 21, the River Plate whizkid’s ceiling is sky-high as he is already good enough to make an instant impact at Villa Park. We can expect Alvarez to add a lot of goals and creativity to Dean Smith’s attack if the Villa head coach can find a way to win the race for his services in January or at the end of this season. Thus, the West Midlands side should think about going all out in pursuit of Alvarez in the future.
