Newcastle United are trying to cement their place in the top flight after their promotion from the Championship last term. However, it has been a start far from good for them, with the Magpies only able to clinch 10 points so far from their first seven matches this season in the Premier League.
The Tyneside club has won only three matches this season which has helped them to stand at the ninth position on the league table. However, they are well aware of the fact that they will have to perform much better than they are doing now and might need some new players on their side to give them that much-needed impetus to strengthen their position in the top tier.
The Magpies have their eyes on a number of players from all over Europe, one of them being the Argentine centre-back Lisandro Lopez, who is currently playing for the Portuguese champions Benfica. The player has been in good form of late and brought glory his club in the form of the Portuguese Primeira Liga trophy in the last term.
His brilliance in the backline has attracted the eyes of a number of clubs including the Premier League newcomers Newcastle United, who are currently facing problems in the backline and help their cause to move up the ladder in the league table.
The 28-year-old defender, who has made a name for himself in top-flight football since his move from the Spanish La Liga club Getafe, to join one of the best clubs in European football, Benfica in 2013, is tied down at the club till 2021. However, the Magpies might try their luck at signing the player in an attempt to revamp their backline and use someone as experienced as Lopez at the heart of their defence.
Known for his diligence to keep his side out of harm’s way, the 28-year-old Argentine can be a menace for the opposition, with his ominous presence at the heart of the defence. He is dangerous in the air while fighting for the ball with the opposition and can also score crucial goals with thumping headers from set pieces.
Newcastle United’s defenders have performed fairly well so far this season. However, there is more ground for improvement for the Magpies in the future and a player like Lisandro Lopez can be a good inclusion to their side. So should Benitez go for him?
