In a recent report, journalist Graeme Bailey claimed that Tottenham Hotspur have set their sights on Lille playmaker Angel Gomes. It has been revealed that Spurs are eyeing a move to bring the English attacker to North London next year.
Gomes’ Impressive Form In Ligue 1
Gomes enjoyed a decent campaign at the French club after he put in a string of impressive displays for them in the final third. The 24-year-old scored two goals and picked up ten assists in 45 matches for Lille last season across all competitions.
The London-born talent was a consistent performer in the opposition half and did well to average 1.1 shots, 1.5 key passes and 0.7 dribbles per game in Ligue 1. He was even tidy when distributing possession after making 91.3% of his attempted passes in the French top tier (stats via whoscored).
His current deal at Lille will run out at the end of this campaign which could open the door for Tottenham to sign him on a cut-price deal this January.
What Will Gomes Bring To Tottenham Hotspur?
Gomes is a good dribbler with the ball and can make some clever runs with it in the final third. He has got the eye to set up a few decent plays for others around him in the opposition half and can strike the ball with venom from long range.
The London-born talent is primarily an attacking midfielder but can also function as a box-to-box midfielder or as a defensive midfielder if needed. However, it remains to be seen whether he can maintain his good form in Premier League football if Spurs manage to bring him on board next year.
Gomes would bring more quality and depth to Tottenham boss Angelos Postecoglu’s frontline. He is good enough to serve as a good, rotational piece in the North London club’s squad.
At 24, the best is yet to come from Gomes. Therefore, Tottenham should focus on going all out to sign him on the cheap when the transfer window commences at the start of next year. However, Postecoglu has to be patient with his development before he can unlock the best out of the gifted playmaker at the London club.
