In a recent interview with Sky Sports, journalist Gianluca Di Marzio claimed that Bologna full-back Riccardo Calafiori wants to join Arsenal this summer. Di Marzio said,
“He (Calafiori) has a high price because Bologna want €50 million (£42m) plus bonuses plus a percentage (of future sale).
“Arsenal is a bit less in their offer, but I think they will do the deal, yes. I think so (he will join the Gunners) because he wants Arsenal. In his mind, it’s only Arsenal.
“Even Chelsea tried to get him but the player said ‘no, I want Arsenal’ because I think Arsenal is considered by the player and his agents the perfect step for his career now.”
Calafiori’s Impressive Form In Serie A
Calafiori enjoyed a solid campaign at the Italian club as he put in a string of impressive displays for them on the defensive end of the field. The 22-year-old made 37 appearances for Bologna last season, netting two goals and securing five assists on all fronts.
The Roma-born talent gave a good account of himself on the defensive end of the field based on his average of 1.6 tackles, 1.7 interceptions and 2.5 clearances per game in Serie A. He was even tidy when distributing the ball from the back after making 89.8% of his attempted passes in league football (stats via whoscored).
Should Arsenal Boss Mikel Arteta Get Calafiori On Board?
Calafiori is a tough-tackling defender who can time his challenges well to secure the ball back for his team inside his half. He doesn’t mind clearing the danger when the opposition are on the offensive and is even proficient at playing his way out from the back.
The Italian central defender can even chip in by scoring and creating his fair share of goals going forward. He is primarily a centre-back but can also function as a left-back if told to do so.
We can expect Calafiori to add more bite and steel to Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta‘s defensive department. He has what it takes to fight for a regular starting spot at the Emirates Stadium in the coming seasons.
At 22, Calafiori has the potential to be a world-class player in his position someday. Hence, the North London club would be wise to get him on board in the summer transfer period.
