AS Monaco are one of the most popular football clubs in France as they have managed to win a lot of major trophies in their history. The Monaco-based club has won the league title eight times, and the French Cup five times among other top honours (via transfermarkt).

However, Monaco are yet to win a major European trophy at the highest level. The French outfit managed to make a push for the top-four spot in the 2022-23 Ligue A campaign.

Now that Monaco is back competing for the right to play in Europe, let’s take a look at their first-ever league triumph.

The Ligue 1 outfit won their first league title in the 1960-61 campaign. They won the French Cup the previous season and went on to win the league title once again the following year.

When Was The Last Time Monaco Won The Ligue 1 Title?

Monaco won their Ligue 1 title in the 2016-17 campaign when they finished at the top of the table with 95 points, eight points above second-placed, Paris Saint-Germain. It was their eighth league success in history.

The French club found the back of the net 107 times and conceded just 31 goals in 38 league matches and ended that season with a positive goal difference of 76.

Monaco had the honour of having the biggest home win and the biggest away win in the 2016-17 Ligue 1 campaign as they beat Nancy 6-0 at home and Metz 7-0 away from home.

They went on a 12-match winning run and a 20-match unbeaten run on their way to winning the league title for the eighth time in their history.

Radamel Falcao banged in 21 goals while Kylian Mbappe scored 15 goals for Monaco during that campaign. Mbappe was just a teenager when he broke out as a first-team starter at the French club at the time.

Philippe Clement will now hope that his current crop of players are good enough to challenge for the league title once again in the coming years despite Paris Saint-Germain’s recent dominance in domestic football.
