Aston Villa locked horns with Liverpool at Anfield earlier today as they focused on grinding out a good result away from home. The Villans made a decent start to the game and managed to earn a penalty which Ollie Watkins failed to convert. However, Jacob Ramsey stepped up for the West Midlands club and scored the opener in the 27th minute with a decent finish. Unai Emery’s men went into the half-time break 1-0 up on the scoreline.

Aston Villa defended their penalty area well in the second half but conceded a late goal as Roberto Firmino scored with a poacher’s finish from close range. The contest ended with the Villans being held to a 1-1 draw at Merseyside.

Let’s take a look at how each Aston Villa player fared during the match against the Reds.

GK: Emiliano Martinez – 7/10

He made a few solid saves during the game and did well to limit the opposition to just one goal.

RB: Matty Cash – 7/10

Cash gave a good account of himself on the defensive end of the field and made one decent run with the ball.

CB: Ezri Konsa – 6.5/10

He defended his penalty box really well at times but won’t be happy after conceding so late in the game.

CB: Tyrone Mings – 7.5/10

Mings was unfortunate not to receive a red card for a reckless challenge on Cody Gakpo in the first half. However, he produced a dominant performance defensively, especially in the second half.

LB: Lucas Digne – 6.5/10

He did his fair share of defending but was replaced in the 52nd minute.

CM: Boubacar Kamara – 7/10

Kamara got stuck in with plenty of solid tackles and made two decent runs with the ball.

CM: Douglas Luiz – 8/10

Luiz was a positive influence at both ends of the field and has got an assist to show for his efforts.

RW: Leon Bailey – 6/10

He came back to defend when needed but offered very little in the final third.

CAM: John McGinn – 7/10

McGinn made some energetic runs with the ball but failed to take his chances in front of the opponent’s goal.

LW: Jacob Ramsey – 7.5/10

He scored the opening goal with a composed finish in the 27th minute. Ramsey also completed a few dangerous dribbles in the final third.

ST: Ollie Watkins – 6.5/10

Watkins worked his socks off in the Liverpool half but missed a crucial penalty in the first half.

Substitutes:

LB: Alex Moreno – 6/10

He was solid at the back but had to be taken off due to an injury.

RB: Ashley Young – 6/10

Young cleared the danger when needed.

CAM: Emiliano Buendia – 6/10

He made one key chance in the final third.

CM: Leander Dendoncker – N/A
