In a recent report, The Daily Mail mentioned that Newcastle United are eyeing a move for Bayer 04 Leverkusen talent Florian Wirtz. It has been claimed that the Magpies are hoping to acquire the services of the German playmaker in the summer.

Wirtz’s Impressive Run Of Form In German Football

Wirtz is experiencing a decent campaign in the Bundesliga as he has managed to put in a run of impressive displays for Leverkusen in the final third. The 19-year-old has found the back of the net twice and picked up five assists in ten matches for the German club this season on all fronts.

The gifted teenager has caught the eye with his performances in the opposition half based on his average of 1.5 tackles, 0.8 clearances, 1.8 key passes and 2.4 dribbles per 90 minutes in Bundesliga. He has even been accurate when distributing possession in the final third after making 80.3% of his attempted passes in league football (stats via whoscored).

His current contract at the German club is set to expire in the summer of 2027. Hence, the Magpies will have to make a big fee if they are serious about recruiting the German prospect.

Is Wirtz A Good Choice For Newcastle United Boss Eddie Howe?

Wirtz loves a tackle and usually works hard for his team defensively. He has got the vision to engineer some decent chances for his teammates in the final third and can complete a few dangerous dribbles in and around the opponent’s penalty box.

The German whizkid is primarily an attacking midfielder but can also fill in as a right-sided wide player or as a centre-forward up top if asked to do so.

We can expect Wirtz to add some much-needed firepower to Newcastle‘s frontline and increase competition for places within Eddie Howe’s match-day squad. Thus, it makes sense for the Magpies to engineer a move to get him on board in the summer.

At 19, the future looks quite promising for Wirtz as long as he continues to improve with each season. Hence, he will be a great option for Howe to consider at the end of this campaign.

However, only time will tell whether he can cope with the physical side and high intensity of Premier League football. Still, the pros outweigh the cons of recruiting him, so the Tyneside giants should focus on going all out to bring Wirtz to St. James’ Park later this year.
