Celtic supporters were recently caught throwing missiles aimed at Steven Gerrard after he celebrated his goal for Liverpool in a charity game at Anfield. The incident happened after the former Rangers boss put the Merseyside club 1-0 up on the scoreline as he converted from the penalty spot in the 38th minute of the game after Martin Skrtel was fouled inside the Celtic penalty box. However, his celebrations didn’t go down well with the Scottish club’s fans as they threw objects at the players.

When reflecting on his goal in an interview with Liverpool’s official website, Gerrard said,

“Listen, it feels good when I score in the back garden against Lio!

“If you love football, if you love the game, if you love this club, I’ll never get tired of that.

“There was a bit of pressure on me! I took my son to football this morning and he scored a couple, so he had said to me, ‘You best score today or you’re going to have to buy me something.’

“At least I’ll save a few quid by getting on the scoresheet!”

The match-day staff at Anfield came in and removed what seemed like bottles among other objects thrown onto the field.

What Provoked The Celtic Fans?

Gerrard scored the opening goal of the game in the 38th minute and didn’t go easy with his celebrations in front of the Celtic faithful. He raised his arms and jumped in the air which probably provoked them to throw objects aimed at the players on the pitch.

The over-the-top celebration for the Liverpool icon didn’t go down well with the Hoops’ fans due to his previous association with their rivals, Rangers.

Steven Gerrard: Managerial Spell At Rangers

The 42-year-old was appointed as the Rangers boss on June 1st, 2018 and went on to taste success with them in the Scottish Premiership.

Gerrard took charge of 192 matches for the Glaswegian side, winning 124, drawing 41 and losing 27 of those games across all competitions. He managed to pick up 2.15 points per game during his time as the Ibox boss (via transfermarkt).

His managerial spell in Rangers came to an end on November 10th, 2021 when he decided to join Aston Villa.

Gerrard’s celebrations might have been a bit much that day. But considering the match was a charity game involving legends at Anfield, the behavior of the Celtic fans was simply unacceptable.

The former England international continued to irritate the away supporters after his goal which provoked a Celtic fan to throw their green and white jersey at the player.
