Recent reports from Spanish media outlet Fichajes states that Manchester City are keen on signing RB Leipzig winger Dani Olmo in the upcoming summer transfer window as Pep Guardiola looks set to add to his attacking options.
‘Despite not occupying the great covers of world football, Dani Olmo has long had a great line-up among the top European teams, having recently played for clubs of the stature of Bayern Munich, Barcelona or Atlético de Madrid, to which that now two others would be added in the summer of 2023, such as Manchester United and Manchester City.’ – the translated version of the report read.
However, Manchester City’s move for Dani Olmo depends on the future of Bernardo Silva. Should the Spaniard choose to leave, the Citizens will intensify their pursuit of the 24-year-old star. Olmo’s current contract at the Red Bull Arena expires in June 2024.
Should Guardiola Go In For Him?
Having come through the ranks at Barcelona’s youth setup, Dani Olmo signed for RB Leipzig from Dinamo Zagreb in January 2020 for a fee in the region of £26 million. Over the course of the last two years, he has made 102 appearances for the Red Bulls, scoring 18 goals and assisting 21 more across all competitions.
Even this season, he has managed to put up some impressive numbers on the board – averaging 0.9 tackles, 1.3 shots, 2 key passes, and 1.3 dribbles per ninety minutes in the German top-flight.
Besides, his versatility allows him to slot in as an attacking midfielder in the hour of need. Manchester City’s squad might be the best in Europe; however, they lack in quantity when it comes to midfield. Kevin De Bruyne turns 32 next year, while Ilkay Gundogan’s contract expires in 2023. Kalvin Phillips has been riddled with injuries so far and Bernardo Silva has been looking for an opportunity to play in Spain for the last couple of years.
Combining all the factors, it’s likely that the Citizens will have to recruit a creative midfielder next summer – and Olmo fits the bill perfectly.
