Manchester City faced off against West Ham United at the London Stadium earlier tonight as they focused on picking up a positive result in the round of 16 stages of the EFL Cup. Pep Guardiola’s men enjoyed more of the ball in the first half but failed to make the breakthrough as both sides went into the half-time break with a goalless scoreline.
It was a similar story in the second half as the two teams played out a 0-0 draw after the full-time whistle. The Mancunian giants ended up losing on penalties by a 5-3 scoreline which knocked them out of the EFL Cup.
Let’s take a look at how each Man City player performed during the clash against the Hammers.
GK: Zach Steffen – 6/10
Steffen made a couple of decent stops during the game but will be disappointed for not saving a penalty in the shootout.
RB: Kyle Walker – 6/10
Walker put in a solid performance in the first half and got replaced at half-time.
CB: John Stones – 6.5/10
The English defensive ace didn’t take too many chances with his clearances and was a threat in the opposition box.
CB: Nathan Ake – 6/10
Ake won a few important aerial duels but didn’t have to do too much defending inside his half.
LB: Oleksandr Zinchenko – 7.5/10
Zinchenko was strong in the air and kept things tidy at the back. He was also quite lively down the left flank.
CM: Kevin De Bruyne – 7/10
The Belgian star created some decent chances for others around him but squandered some good opportunities to score himself.
CM: Fernandinho – 6.5/10
The Brazilian midfield ace anchored the midfield quite well and engineered a couple of key chances going forward.
CM: Ilkay Gundogan – 7.5/10
The Man City midfielder was quite creative on the ball and made two encouraging runs with the ball.
RW: Riyad Mahrez – 7/10
Mahrez was always to hurt the opposition with his passing but didn’t have his shooting boots on tonight.
ST: Cole Palmer – 6.5/10
Palmer showed some glimpses of what he is capable of during his time on the field. He got replaced in the 75th minute.
LW: Raheem Sterling – 6.5/10
The ex-Liverpool speedster interchanged possession relatively well but was a bit wasteful in front of the Hammers goal.
Substitutes:
RB: Joao Cancelo – 6.5/10
He scored his penalty in the shootout but it was not enough in the end.
ST: Phil Foden – 5,5/10
Foden was looking sharp in the latter stages of the game but missed his penalty in the shootout.
ST: Gabriel Jesus – 6/10
He struggled to get into the flow of the game but did convert his penalty.
LW: Jack Grealish – N/A
He didn’t get enough minutes to warrant a rating.
