Latest reports from Sky Sports indicates that Sunderland are in talks with Celtic to sign Lewis Morgan on loan. The 22-year-old wide man had previously played for Black Cats boss Jack Ross when he was the manager of St. Mirren and the winger had joined them on loan in January 2018.

Sunderland will have to beat competition from Aberdeen as they are also in the mix (The Express) to sign this Scottish international. However, the fact that the player had already worked with Ross before gives Sunderland an edge over their rival (our opinion).

The Black Cats have sold Josh Maja in this window, and they need to bolster their attacking options as the Englishman was often the difference maker in the attacking third. Wingers and midfielders will now need to step up to replace his goals, and Morgan has the ingredients to make the difference.

The 22-year-old has struggled to get game time at Celtic Park, and the left winger has managed to start just one game this season. Morgan had come up from St. Mirren’s academy and managed 29 goals in 118 appearances for them. The new signing of Oliver Burke and Timothy Weah are also not good piece of news for Morgan as both of them can play in the wide regions.

It’s clear that Rodgers doesn’t rate him much at the moment and Morgan will have to leave Parkhead to prove his worth. At Sunderland, he should look to get his career back on track and playing under a manager with whom he had done well might bring the best out of him once again.

Morgan, however, needs to bring improvement to his game as he often lacks the final product when he gets into the attacking third. Something like that can only be improved upon with regular game time, and Morgan would hope for a successful loan spell at the Stadium of Light which should get him back in the reckoning with Celtic.

Jack Ross currently doesn’t have any natural left wingers in the squad, so it is understandable why he looks keen to pull off a deal for Morgan. A move like this should suit everyone involved as we don’t see the player getting many opportunities with Celtic this season. Morgan can be a decent bet for Sunderland as his pace and work rate are impressive. The manager would also know the strengths and weaknesses of the player and all in all; this looks like a perfect move on paper which Sunderland should look to pull off.
