Rangers did their business early in the January transfer window, and they secured the services of Glen Kamara from Dundee on a pre-contract agreement. The former Arsenal midfielder is in the final few months of his contract and reports from the Express as cited by the Scotsman indicates that Rangers have offered Dundee £50,000 to sign the midfielder this month.

Dundee boss Jim McIntyre earlier gave an indication (Sky Sports) that he could look to sell the midfielder in January to ensure that the club does not lose him for free in the summer. McIntyre was quoted as saying, ”I think when a player signs a pre-contract nine times out of 10 he would rather move on – everybody is aware of that. Discussions are ongoing, we will see where it leads.”

There were even reports (The Scottish Sun) of Dundee wanting Ross McCrorie on loan for the rest of the season to let Kamara leave this month, but Rangers had turned down that opportunity as McCrorie has become an essential part of Gerrard’s team. It remains to be seen though whether Dundee would accept the bid or would rather keep hold of their midfielder until the end of the season.

Rangers are under no pressure to get their man as they have already signed the midfielder for the next season. The Bears also have a decent amount of cover in the midfield department. Therefore, one can understand why they have put in such a meagre bid for Kamara.

The Gers have also signed former midfielder Steven Davis from Southampton, and that gives the manager plenty of option in midfield as he has the likes of Ryan Jack, McCrorie, Scott Arfield, Lassana Coulibaly, Andy Halliday and new signing Davis.

Kamara will be a decent addition for the future even if Rangers don’t manage to land him in this transfer window. The Finland international is robust in his challenges and can be deployed in various roles in midfield when required. The 23-year-old can sit back and play as a defensive midfielder or in a more box to box role. The signing of Kamara isn’t a good sign for someone like Lassana Coulibaly as we don’t think the Gers would try to sign him permanently once his loan spell expires.

If the Dundee midfielder was a creative player, then Steven Gerrard should have gone all out in bringing him to the Ibrox in this window. However, the manager has midfielders who are in the same mould as Kamara and that is the reason why Rangers are offering such a low amount. It remains to be seen in the next few days what Dundee would do with the bid.
