Latest reports from the Express confirms that Rangers are ready to dive in the January window again to strengthen Steven Gerrard’s team further and it is believed that the club would be looking to pull off as many as four signings with a striker being the top priority. Not too long ago it was announced that the Gers suffered a massive loss of £14m for the year up to June, but that doesn’t seem to be deterring them as the club is willing to back Gerrard once again in the transfer window.
The manager recently slammed his team for the lack of quality in the final third and indicated that he wouldn’t hesitate to go in the transfer window again if the current crop of players failed to deliver the goods. Gerrard was quoted as saying (After semi-final defeat against Aberdeen),”What I’ll assure everyone is that won’t be our last semi-final. If it means I have to go and buy better quality players for when we get to this stage, that’s what will happen.
”If the players that we’ve got now don’t improve and start showing the quality we need in the final third, my job is to find the players who will. Otherwise, we are never going to win anything.”
It’s clear that the English manager is going to be ruthless in his approach and the board seems to be firmly behind their new gaffer.
The reports also say that Umar Sadiq could be sent back to Roma in January and it seems clear that Gerrard doesn’t rate him too highly. That is one of the reasons why signing a striker could be a priority for the Gers as the gaffer is looking to ease out the burden from Alfredo Morelos who has been the only goal scoring threat this season.
It remains to be seen what other positions Gerrard would like to improve, but we feel a left back, and a creative and goal scoring midfielder could also be on that list. Borna Barisic’s injury of late has given Jon Flanagan a constant run in the left-back role but its clear that the former Liverpool fullback is going to struggle as a left back, and we believe he should be used just as a cover for the right-back spot. A creative midfielder seems to be a must as not enough goals are coming from midfield, and the current group of midfielders lack the guile and decisiveness to open up the opposing defence from the middle.
One didn’t expect Rangers to have a big January window as they made as many as 15 signings in the summer but it seems clear that the board under the new management of Gerrard wants to improve the squad swiftly and bring back the glory days at Ibrox soon.
