Southampton can hand Joe Hart a lifeline in the Premier League to revive his career after he was snubbed from the World Cup squad by Gareth Southgate. According to reports, the Saints are interested in having the services of experienced English international but they will have to fight for his signature as  Wolverhampton Wanderers are also interested in getting the veteran custodian as they look to prepare for life in the English top division.

Southampton were able to hang by a thread in the Premier League as they finished 17th. They will probably know that they need to improve on all the fronts to avoid a relegation scare next year. The Saints have used Fraser Forster and Alex McCarthy as their goalkeepers this season and McCarthy did well and played his part to save Southampton from relegation in the latter half of the season

Since the arrival of Pep Guardiola, Joe Hart has been playing on loan, first at Italian club Torino and then at West Ham United. However, he hasn’t covered himself with glory by his performances as he has been shoddy and reckless at the back. Hart even lost his place at West ham to Adrian in the latter half of the season.

Southampton seems to probably have an edge to sign Hart as his former Birmingham and England goalkeeping coach Dave Watson is now head of goalkeeping at St Mary’s. Hart has been fond of Watson as he even tried to have him at Manchester City.

Regarding his non-selection in the World Cup squad, Hart said,”Not going to lie, I’m gutted. After two years of trying to make the most of a really tough situation, this is hard to take. I’m proud to have put in the graft and play every minute to qualify with the team and have a really important input in that outcome. I know what I bring to the team, but it is what it is. Good luck to the team out there.”

One cannot blame Southgate for excluding him as he has been error-prone at his time with the Hammers. It is clear that there is no way he will get back into the Manchester City lineup after the emergence of Ederson and City will probably sell him in the summer. Hart has been below par but he is still a thorough professional and an experienced man like him will certainly add a lot of strength at the St.Mary’s. Apart from that, he has shown that he is going to continue fighting for his place and that is always a good sign as that shows the hunger of the player even after being capped for the national team 75 times.
