Reports suggest that Schalke’s playmaker Max Meyer could be heading to the North London club, Tottenham. The 22-year old’s contract runs out at the end of the season and he is yet to pen a new deal. Tottenham have risen to make Meyer a top priority. They would be hoping to fend off interests from Barcelona and strike a deal with the German international. He had a poor run last season and is yet to hit the ground running this tenure.
At just 22 years of age, Meyer is a wonderful passer of the ball. He is regarded as one of Germany’s brightest youngsters. He is excellent on the ball with his ability to spot a pass and also take players on. The flexibility regarding his position on the pitch provides his manager with a variety of option, to play on the flanks and also through the centre.
The youngster had a fantastic season with the Schalke under-19 squad in 2012-13 where he bagged 11 goals and 11 assists in just 15 matches. The headlines started to ring around Germany following this season. It was also the season that gave him the breakthrough into the senior squad. Since then, there has been no looking back.
A move to Tottenham could just revitalise his career. With a lack of depth in that position, he could be a great backup for the likes of Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen. An injury to either one of them could break Tottenham’s rhythm.
Max Mayer possesses a game similar to both Alli and Eriksen both who have been standout performers. He would fit perfectly into Tottenham’s system. Mauricio Pochettino could just be the coach to strengthen his abilities and shape him into a better player. Given Meyer’s potential, he could be a huge bargain for The Lilywhites as his contract runs down at the end of the season.
With Barcelona also interested in the German, Tottenham will have to fight hard in this race. Meyer admitted his interest to move to the Premier League earlier this year. This could pave way for Tottenham to lure him and fend off interest from other suitors.
A move to Barcelona could hamper his development because of the availability of abundant talent in those areas already. Here at Tottenham, it provides him a greater opportunity to develop and prove his worth. Pochettino will also need to make this move a priority considering their lack of depth in areas further up the pitch.
Will Meyer complete his move to White Hart Lane?
