Barcelona are very much in the transfer market as they are still searching for some reinforcements. They missed out on a number of targets in the summer but Ernesto Valverde is gearing up for the January transfer window and already has started chalking his plans.
According to reports, The Catalans are preparing a move for RB Leipzig’s Timo Werner. The German international has been one of the most sought-after youngsters following his brilliant displays for the German club last season. The 21-year-old has been on the radar for a number of clubs and has already started this season in exuberant fashion. The youngster has already netted five goals in the Bundesliga this season and is arguably one of the finest young forwards in the European circuit right now.
Barcelona sporting director Robert Fernandez had scouted the player earlier when he was playing at various international levels. There are a number of strikers available at Valverde’s disposal right now with the likes of Luis Suarez and Paco Alcacer.
But the need of an energetic forward seems to be the priority for the gaffer who also had to part ways with Neymar who left the Nou Camp for Paris Saint Germain. There is no doubt over Suarez’s quality but he needs some competition in the side. Paco Alcacer doesn’t seem to have a long future at the club so a move for Werner makes sense.
Real Madrid are also keeping a tab on the player. Los Blancos currently don’t have many options in the forward department other than Karim Benzema and 20-year-old Borja Mayoral.
Benzema can be very inconsistent sometimes while Borja is still trying to get a foothold at the Santiago Bernabeu. The Spanish giants had a quiet summer this time but Zinedine Zidane wants to invest heavily following the departure of Alvaro Morata.
The Spanish international was allowed to join Chelsea in the summer following a tug of transfer war and he has settled in quite well on the English soil. So Zidane wants to fill the void vacated by the player and has identified the German international as a part of his contingency plan.
Werner’s contract is scheduled to expire in 2020 but he already has given a slight hint that if an opportunity comes, he would embrace it with both hands. Liverpool are also keeping an eye on the forward so the Catalans can expect a three-pronged transfer battle as it seems. So should Valverde go all in for him?
