Leeds United suffered their first league defeat last weekend away to Millwall but clinched a dramatic win in a tie-breaker against Premier League outfit Burnley in the Third Round tie of the League Cup. The Peacocks hosted Ipswich Town in a top of the table clash at Elland Road and gaffer Thomas Christiansen was confident of getting back to winning ways following last weekend’s slip up.
The hosts started the game brilliantly and eventually secured a 3-2 triumph which helps them maintain their top-of-the-table status.
Below are the Leeds United players rated from the fixture.
Felix Wiedwald: 6
The custodian looked confident with his outings but could have done little to deny Ipswich Town’s equalizer via David McGoldrick’s header which, however, did not last long. He conceded again in the second half when Joe Garner pulled one back to keep the Tractor boys in the game.
Luke Ayling: 7
Ayling was great defensively and made some purposeful forward runs down the right-hand flank.
Conor Shaughnessy: 8
The young defender did exceptionally well this afternoon as he not only maintained his defensive composure but also found Lasogga upfront with a sublime through pass which was eventually converted by the German to earn his side an early lead.
Liam Cooper: 6.5
Cooper was calm and composed on most occasions but looked a little nervy from opponent’s set-pieces.
Vurnor Anita: 7
Anita performed his defensive responsibilities in a make-shift left back role and did not allow Ipswich to create enough trouble down the left-hand flank. Did not offer much in attack though. Was taken off at around one-hour mark to be replaced by Gaetano Berardi.
Kalvin Phillips: 7.5
Phillips worked hard, kept the midfield fluid with his runs and continued his great scoring run with a sublime strike to restore the lead.
Eunan O’Kane: 7
O’Kane broke down Ipswich’s attacks in midfield and kept on spreading the game using the width of the pitch.
Ezgjan Alioski: 6.5
The Macedonian wingman almost scored with his long-range efforts on a couple of occasions which narrowly missed the target.
Samuel Saiz: 7
The Spaniard kept on playing a few smart one-twos with the attackers and troubled the Ipswich back-line with his runs and link-up play. Also, set up Leeds’ second of the afternoon with a headed pass for Kalvin Phillips.
Pablo Hernandez: 6
The veteran Spaniard had a quiet afternoon compared to his previous outings and was replaced by Stuart Dallas in the second half.
Pierre-Michel Lasogga: 7.5
The German attacker continued his great scoring run and broke the deadlock within 15 minutes into the game with a right-footed strike. Was replaced by Jay-Roy Grot in closing minutes.
Substitutes
Gaetano Berardi: 6.5
Makes his first-team return following a shoulder injury and did well to secure a win for his side.
Stuart Dallas: 6.5
Came in place of Pablo Hernandez and impressed with his footwork.
Jay-Roy Grot: NA
Played too little to warrant a rating.
