Arsenal have been repeatedly linked with a centre-back throughout the summer along with a new striker and as of now fans are still on the wait for either of those two happening. Though Wenger has signed Rob Holding, he does not seem to be a player who is going to feature regularly or provide an upgrade to the players available to the Frenchman.
While Arsenal have bafflingly registered impressive defensive statistics in the last couple of seasons, it was mainly down to the individual brilliance of Petr Cech in goal and Laurent Koscielny hardly putting a foot wrong in front of him. Players like Mertesacker and Gabriel have performed in sporadic bursts and have suffered more bad days than good.
And with the latest conundrum Arsenal find themselves in regarding the defensive situation, the club have seemingly gone into overdrive to look for reinforcements. Mertesacker is out injured for presumably a prolonged period of time and Wenger has already ruled Koscielny out from the season opener against Liverpool which left Gabriel and Chambers along with the newcomer Rob Holding as the options available. But tragedy struck when Gabriel was stretchered off in the closing stages of the win against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City. As of now, the Gunners are left with Chambers and Holding as the central defensive options available to them.
And with the season looming large and the fans as disillusioned as they ever have been, Wenger has moved emphatically to address the defensive situation and if reports are to be believed he is ready to make and outrageous £16m bid for wait-for-it JONNY EVANS!
After a summer of saving up to buy a new jersey of preferably a world-class striker or a premier defender, Arsenal fans are on the brink of being rewarded with the signing of Jonny Evans, who was a Manchester United reject last season. With this latest piece of news, fans have gone into a meltdown and Wenger and Arsenal have been bashed brutally on social media, as is the trend.
