It looks like Pepe Reina’s stint with Serie A side, Napoli SSC is about to come to an end after this season. The 36-year-old said, “Football will take me elsewhere. This is my last season at Napoli. In football that’s how it works: today you are here, tomorrow somewhere else.”
According to Il Mattino, the confession came during his daughter, Grecia’s birthday party and Reina has gone so far as to not renew her registration for the following school year.
The shot stopper’s contract has not been renewed by the Ciucciarelli and this has prompted Paris Saint-Germain and AC Milan to make him an offer.
Reina arrived at the Stadio San Paolo in the summer of 2013 on a loan deal from Liverpool and ended up making a return in 2015. The Spaniard was not favoured in the Premier League side and had to spend a season away to Bayern Munich as well, playing second fiddle to Manuel Neuer and making just 3 senior team appearances.
Reina has racked up 169 total appearances with Napoli so far and is still the number one option ahead of Rafael Cabral and Luigi Sepe. He is one of the senior-most figures in the club ranks and has been a key to their success in domestic competitions.
Even though other European giants have approached the 36 time Spanish international here are a few Premier League clubs who should consider signing him.
Liverpool
We all are aware of the struggle Liverpool has gone through with the position in between the sticks and at one point was linked with several high profile names to replace the current occupants. Jurgen Klopp had to delegate his responsibilities in a rotational manner which has seen both Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius get shifted around in the role.
Karius has managed to carve out the starting role after finding a bit of consistency in his performances and has appeared 18 times this season.
However, Klopp would not mind signing an able professional to match the likes of rival sides with David DeGea, Ederson, Thibaut Courtois, Petr Cech and Hugo Lloris.
Everton
Jordan Pickford has picked up a lot of attention from Manchester United in recent times and has been pegged as DeGea’s replacement if the Spaniard does make the switch to Real Madrid. If the Toffees do end up losing their number 1 shot stopper, Reina can be a prime candidate with a whole lot of experience under his belt.
Crystal Palace
Roy Hodgson has been trying to replace the incompetence of Julian Speroni and Wayne Hennessey since the January window and Reina could be on his shortlist for the summer transfer market.
