Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea is set to pen a new contract with the club. According to recent reports, the Spanish goalkeeper is prepared to commit his long-term future to the Red Devils by extending his contract. Some sources were recently linking him with a move away from Old Trafford with Real Madrid being long-admirers of his talents and could end up making a move for his signature next summer. De Gea is currently on a £210,000-a-week contract which is set to run until the end of the next campaign, with the option of a further one-year extension.
The Spanish goalkeeper has made 33 appearances for the Red Devils this term, conceding only 22 goals and keeping 19 clean sheets. He has undoubtedly cemented his place amongst the world’s greatest goalkeepers and Jose Mourinho will do well if he can manage to secure his long-term future at the club.
It is being reported that Jose Mourinho’s side are looking to offer him a new deal which will keep him at Old Trafford until the summer of 2021. The Spaniard put in a man of the match display which helped his side secure a 0-0 draw away at Sevilla in their UEFA Champions League last 16 clash.
Manchester United are currently sitting in second place in the Premier League table with a tally of 56 points in 27 league matches. In any other campaign, Jose Mourinho’s team would be well in contention of winning the league but the record-breaking form of Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City has seen them fall behind in the race for the league title. The Citizens of Manchester are leading the Premier League by a staggering 16 points with the Red Devils desperately trying to play catch up with their ‘noisy neighbours’.
The departure of De Gea could leave the Red Devils significantly depleted so if they can keep him at the club for the coming years, then he might be able to help them close the gap to City going into the new season.
De Gea pulled off one of the saves of the season to deny Luis Muriel during United’s match versus Sevilla which has gained a lot of praise from Manchester United legends. The best thing that the Red Devils can do in the summer is to retain their star players so that they can build around them in pursuit of a bigger and brighter future. It remains to be seen whether De Gea ends up signing a new long-term contract which will extend his stay at Old Trafford for the coming years.
