Recent reports claim that Paris Saint-Germain are among a host of Ligue 1 clubs who would like to sign Karim Benzema in the summer transfer window if Real Madrid agrees to sell him. Florentino Perez’s plans to offload a bunch of his club veterans in order to make way for Neymar is already being set up and Benzema might be on his wantaway list.
Karim Benzema is currently undergoing one of his worst seasons in a Galactico shirt – not that he has had many. But a 7-goal tally in 28 games so far is only a shadow of what he has shown us in the past. The Frenchman arrived at the Santiago Bernabeu in the summer of 2009 and has gone on to make a staggering 393 appearances for the club. Often playing second fiddle to Cristiano Ronaldo in the final third, Benzema has not let it slow down his scoring form.
Plenty of strikers have found themselves put on a Madrid jersey but none have been able to match up to the talents of the Frenchman. Gonzalo Higuain had to find himself an escape in Napoli and Alvaro Morata to Chelsea.
But even after winning 2 La Liga titles and 3 UEFA Champion League trophies, it looks like the former Olympique Lyonnais striker’s stint with the Spanish giants might just be coming to an end.
Lyon would love to have their wonderkid make a return, now as a man, having conquered the European stage and looking to finish his career on a high. But is it already an onset of early retirement? The Frenchman is just 30 years old and still has heaps of football left in him.
He still has not lost his athletic abilities or his nimble footwork, just his run of form to chip in on a regular basis.
After undergoing one offseason, it is anticipated that the centre-forward will return to his past self and take up the scoring responsibilities of his team. PSG would like it if he switched to the Parc des Princes and joined in the final third alongside Neymar, Edinson Cavani, Kylian Mbappe and Angel Dimaria.
Granted Cavani is the first choice to appear in goal and Benzema’s arrival will force the Uruguayan to either make an exit or deter to a rotational role which he might not agree to. If Madrid’s wants to do away with their number nine, PSG would be a prime destination for Benzema who will have to opportunity to still win major trophies and compete in the Champions League.
