Manchester United fans will be overjoyed to hear David De Gea’s recent statements to the media. The Spaniard was quoted, “Time flies by so quickly. I’ve been here seven years and I am happy. A lot has happened to me – some very good, some not so good, – but to be honest I am just really happy. I feel like an important player in the dressing room. I am one of the oldest in the team. It makes me happy to see the younger players coming through – and trying to make United big.”
Reports had emerged earlier about a possible contract extension but no words have come out of the club ranks about any negotiation taking place. It only led to further speculations over the 27-year-old’s future amid heavy interests from the European champions, Real Madrid themselves.
David De Gea has been United’s saviour in goal for the last four seasons and he is arguably the best stoppers in the game right now alongside Manuel Neuer. Should De Gea agree to sign the new contract, United fans will have a lot to celebrate about.
But with his contract set to end by the end of next season, is his silence a sign of an uncertain future at Old Trafford? When asked about his future, De Gea said, “I don’t think it’s ever good to discuss the future or what may happen. Only the present, feeling well, playing well and helping United is important.”
His ambitions lie in winning trophies and even though Manchester United have resurrected their status in top-flight football in recent times, a move to Real Madrid will look like an opportunity you cannot miss out upon.
Ever since Iker Casillas left the club back in 2014 fans at Santiago Bernabeu have seen a number of familiar faces get shifted around in the position over the years, but nobody could cement a permanent spot. The case is similar to current keepers, Keylor Navas and Kiko Casilla. Navas is the first choice under Zidane and is definitely a prolific talent, but the 31-year-old suffers from bouts of inconsistency.
Florentino Perez’s search for the perfect shot-stopper has not gone seamlessly either over the past year. Thibaut Courtois’ earlier statements revealed that the Belgian is eager to stay with Chelsea and is very close to signing a new deal with the club. A move for Athletic Bilbao’s Kepa Arrizabalaga also hit a rough patch when the 23-year-old failed the medical test at Los Blancos and is expected to be out of action until March.
It seems like De Gea is the ultimate prize that Madrid are destined to win. Manchester United well have to address the Spaniard’s situation fast if they plan on either keeping him or getting a significant amount of money over his transfer.
