Paris Saint-Germain have set their eyes on Manchester United’s Jose Mourinho as Unai Emery’s replacement in the managerial department. PSG owner, Nasser Al-Khelaifi was less than happy to see his side lose 3-1 against Real Madrid earlier in the week and this would imply that Emery is in peril of losing his job as head coach.
The former-Sevilla boss succeeded Laurent Blanc to the manager position in the summer of 2016 and so far has delivered just one Ligue 1 title and one French Cup trophy. A spendthrift club who currently employs two of the world’s most expensive players has the expectation of winning major trophies every season.
While the domestic competition poses less of a threat, PSG’s priority is to topple Real Madrid as the European champions, not lose to them in the Round of 16 and make an early exit. PSG were too complacent in the late stages of the match to allow the Galacticos slot in 2 goals and get the advantage over them.
Emery’s accomplishments lie in winning the UEFA Europa League trophy 3 times in a row with Sevilla but the Spaniard still has ways to go before he can break waves against the elites. PSG needs a sound accomplished head to manage the team which is filled with decorated names in world football.
Mourinho is a prime candidate to check all their boxes, but will he be available now that his contract with the Red Devils has been extended to the summer of 2020? After signing his extension, the Portuguese tactician said, “I am really honoured and proud to be Manchester United manager. I would like to say a big thank you to the owners and to Mr Woodward for the recognition of my hard work and dedication. I am delighted they feel and trust that I am the right manager for this great club for the foreseeable future.”
Mourinho has unquestionable knowledge of the Champions League. His entire career came into the limelight when the 55-year-old led a humble FC Porto side to the Champions League trophy in the 2003/04 season. He also was successful in breaking Chelsea’s 50-year-league-title drought in his debut season and marked the end of Barcelona’s dominance in the La Liga while managing Real Madrid for 3 seasons.
He won the European competition with Inter Milan as well and it would be a coup for the French giants to acquire his services in the near future. The possibility of it happening might seem distant at the moment but United are not exactly cruising in the Premier League either.
They have struggled to match strides with their noisy neighbours and this makes Mourinho’s future with the Red Devils all the more uncertain.
