Ipswich Town are considering making a move for Colchester United manager John McGreal in the near future. According to recent reports in the English press, the Tractor Boys are looking to bring him as a successor to their current manager Mick McCarthy at Ipswich. It is believed that McCarthy’s position at the club is not under immediate threat but some sources in the English media has already claimed that Ipswich club chiefs have been left impressed with ex-player McGreal’s work at Colchester United who plays in the League Two of English football.
McGreal has made a reputation at Colchester United for developing young talent at the Essex club since taking over the helm in the summer of 2016. His brilliant work at Colchester has not gone unnoticed with the Ipswich board currently on the lookout for a new manager who can take over after McCarthy’s tenure at the club.
McGreal played for five years at Portman Road during his football career featuring in over 150 matches for the Tractor Boys. Hence, he would have an in-depth knowledge of what he is getting into if a future move transpires to Ipswich. Colchester are currently in 11th place in the League One standings and has done well under the guidance of McGreal. However, his managerial talents could be better utilised on a league above the fourth tier of English football.
Mick McCarthy’s side finds themselves in 12th place in the Championship table with a tally of 40 points in 28 league matches. They are still in with an outside chance to secure one of the playoff spots at the end of the season with just six points separating them from sixth-placed Sheffield United. However, the Tractor Boys needs to turn their fortunes for the better in the coming months in order to do so.
McCarthy might look to delve into the transfer market to try and make some quality additions to boost their chances of a promotion to the Premier League via the playoffs going into the second half of the season. Although it would be easier said than done, considering how the club has just picked up 5 points in their last five league outings. They are currently preparing for a home clash versus league leaders Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday where a victory would do wonders for their confidence going forward.
It remains to be seen if the Tractor Boys make a move for John McGreal in the near future as Mick McCarthy’s time at Ipswich Town slowly but surely coming to an end.
