Millwall are closing in on a surprise move for former Premier League forward Tim Cahill. According to recent reports in the English media, the Lions have offered a contract to Cahill setting up a fairytale return to English football for the Australian international. The 38-year-old forward has flown to England ahead of a move to his former club Millwall. The Sydney born player has been playing in his home country and has held talks with the English Championship side where he spent six years of his football career before joining Everton.

Cahill left Melbourne City in December last year and is eager to play regular first-team ahead of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, which kicks off later this year in Russia. The former Everton star reckons that he needs to play football at a high level after helping Australia qualify for the World Cup. The Australian international began his football career playing for Millwall back in 1998 and played a key role in their surprise 2004 FA Cup final run, which they eventually lost out to Manchester United.

He also won the League One title and featured in two playoff-finals during his six-year spell at the east London club. Cahill has earned 103 international caps for the Australian national team, scoring 50 goals throughout his international career.

The Lions are currently in 15th place in the English Championship standings with a tally of 34 points in 28 league matches. They are in danger of getting dragged into a relegation dogfight going into the second half of their campaign. Neil Harris’s side sits just five points above the drop zone and are in need of some favourable results in the upcoming matches to get themselves safe and secured for another season in the second tier of English football.

One of the major reasons for their recent misfortunes has been their lack of firepower up top. The addition of Cahill will definitely bolster Neil Harris’s attacking options and might give them a push to move on up the league table. The Australian international has scored 56 goals and made 23 assists in 226 league matches in the Premier League. He also has a wealth of experience in the old First Division and notched up 94 appearances, scoring 25 goals and providing 2 assists. However, at 38, it will be a gamble to sign him but a gamble that the Lions are definitely willing to take in their quest to avoid the drop at the end of this season.

It remains to be seen if the Australian legend can help Millwall secure another season in the English Championship ahead of his last World Cup adventure with the Australian national team.
