Tottenham Hotspur travelled to the St. Mary’s Stadium to take on Southampton on Sunday looking to bag all three points which would help them in their quest to finish in the top 4 this season. Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino opted for a 4-2-3-1 formation and was without the services of Hugo Lloris and Christian Eriksen who both missed out on the contest due to an illness. They made a slow start to the game and conceded a Davinson Sanchez own goal in the 15th minute. However, the visitors recovered soon and responded within three minutes of the opener through Harry Kane, who fired home a header from a corner. The two sides battled hard in the first half and went into halftime with nothing to split them. The match was end to end in the second half but both teams were toothless in front of goal and ultimately ended up sharing the spoils.
Tottenham Hotspur Players Rated And Slated:
GK: Michel Vorm – 7/10
He made a few good saves in the game to keep the Saints attack at bay. He couldn’t do much about the opening goal.
RB: Serge Aurier – 6/10
He was caught out of position at times, especially during the Saints opener but was always an outlet for Spurs on the right flank.
CB: Davinson Sanchez – 5/10
He was unlucky to score an own goal while defending a dangerous ball into the box during the first quarter of the game. He looked shaky in defence after the incident but overall, did just about enough not to concede any further goals in the contest.
CB: Jan Vertonghen – 7/10
He looked solid at the back for Spurs and did enough in defence to help his team share the spoils.
LB: Ben Davies – 7/10
He coped well defensively and looked a threat down the left flank while going forward. However, his final ball into the box sometimes let him down.
CM: Eric Dier -6/10
He struck the post early on and was unlucky not to score in the first half. His impact in the midfield faded as the match progressed.
CM: Mousa Dembele – 6/10
He put in a tireless shift at the centre of the park and was full of energy during the match.
RM: Moussa Sissoko – 5/10
He failed to provide a creative spark from the midfield in Eriksen’s absence and was unable to have a positive impact on the opposition half.
LM: Heung-Min Son – 5/10
Not his best day out in a Spurs shirt. He was unable to get on the ball enough for his team in attacking areas which turned into a lacklustre performance.
CAM: Dele Alli – 6/10
He huffed and puffed in the number 10 position and tried his best to conjure up a winning goal in the second half. However, he lost possession quite a few times in midfield which capped off a mediocre display.
ST: Harry Kane – 7/10
By far, the best player on the pitch for Spurs. He was always a threat to the Saints defence and came up with a goal, just three minutes after Southampton scored their opener. However, he missed his team’s best opportunity in the second half when he dragged his shot off target from a tight angle.
Substitutes:
LM: Erik Lamela – 6/10
He came off the bench and tried his best to score a winner. He was unlucky when his goal-bound attempt from close range was deflected out for a corner.
RB: Kieran Trippier – 5/10
He failed to have an impact in the final quarter of the game and got cautioned for a bad foul.
CM: Victor Wanyama – 5/10
He was wasteful with his shot from long-range in the dying embers of the game.
