Inter Milan are reportedly interested in signing Erik Lamela in the coming weeks. The club’s technical co-ordinator, Walter Sabatini is well versed with the Argentinian’s talents having worked with him previously in AS Roma.
Lamela has just recently returned to match fitness after spending over a year on the sidelines. He is highly favoured to appear from the bench in the Premier League fixture against West Ham United.
The 25-year-old’s injury has caused quite a bit of trouble for Mauricio Pochettino. His absence has left the manager with no quality options on the wing in their heavily stacked schedule. Moussa Sissoko and Georges-Kévin N’Koudou have failed to put in decent shifts and the Spurs have been highly anticipating a Lamela comeback.
However, judging by the few off the bench performances, the versatile wingman needs a lot of work to get back to his former self. Still a little bit rusty he can in no way overtake inform Christian Eriksen or Son Heung-Min in the starting lineup.
This makes his future with the club questionable with the Serie A giants ready to whisk him away as soon as possible.
Inter started off the season remarkably with their star forward, Mauro Icardi firing on all cylinders. It looked like they were finally well poised to stop Juventus’ title-winning streak along with Napoli.
However, they have failed to uphold their own standards and have endured a very tough December schedule. The Black and Blues registered two of their only two league losses against Udinese and Sassuolo consecutively and are on a 4 game winless run.
A gap of 8 points has opened up between them and league leaders, Napoli and the team are in dire need of restrengthening to address their inconsistency issues.
Erik Lamela can bring a fresh bout of energy into the club and make an immediate impact for Luciano Spalletti.
His pace and skilled left-foot can provide a bit of width to the attacking lineup from the right-hand side. A tired and lacklustre Antonio Candreva can no longer be counted upon to get the side goals and needs to replaced soon.
Lamela can take up his spot in the 4-2-3-1 lineup enforced by the Italian manager. Lamela’s tendency to cut in from the right along with an ability to spread the play can work wonders to get the team back to winning ways.
However, it will be interesting to see whether Pochettino will let go of Lamela without finding a replacement in the January transfer window.
