Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois is considering his future at Stamford Bridge and might make a move back to Spain due to family reasons. Recent sources have revealed that the Belgian will reject a new offer from Chelsea even if the London club meets his wage demands as he misses his two children and plans to be closer to them in the near future. Both of his children are being brought up in Madrid and the Belgian understandably wants to see them on a regular basis.
Courtois has 18 months remaining on his current contract with Chelsea trying to offer him an extension. Further talks are set to take place between the club and the goalkeeper in the coming months. However, the Belgian goalkeeper recently confessed his desire to go back to his family in Spain.
In an interview with the Spanish station LaSexta, Courtois admitted:
“Everybody knows that due to my personal situation, Spain attracts me. If it is not now, it will be in some years.”
The negotiations for a new deal began earlier this year when the 24-year-old reportedly asked Chelsea to double his current salary which is £100,000-a-week. The club’s initial offer in May was rejected by the player as it was falling short of his demands. There have been no further talks since then.
Real Madrid has shown interest in the Belgian goalkeeper in the past and are considering their options and may make an official move in the summer. Although, the Los Blancos are also keeping their eyes on Manchester United’s David De Gea and Athletic Bilbao’s Kepa Arrizabalaga with the duo on top of their wishlist. Some reports are claiming that a return to Athletico Madrid might also be on the cards for Courtois.
The 24-year-old spent three years on loan at the Spanish capital with Athletico Madrid from Chelsea between 2011-14 where he earned four major honours which includes winning the La Liga and the Europa League.
The Belgian is currently enjoying his time in London and has become one of the most integral members of the Chelsea dressing room. When pressed about whether he was expecting an offer from Real Madrid, the Chelsea goalkeeper said, “No, I’m calm. I’m happy at Chelsea. I just want to wait (over contract talks) because now there are many games and I prefer to have my head focused on that.”
It remains to be seen if the Los Blancos make a concrete offer for his services in the summer.
