West Ham United had a smooth summer transfer window as they roped in the likes of Marko Arnautovic and Javier Hernandez to bolster their squad. However, they have missed out on a couple of their potential transfer targets with William Carvalho being one of them.
The Portuguese midfield enforcer has been Slaven Bilic’s top target and at one time it seemed they had their player under their fold but Sporting Lisbon raised their demands at the dying moment and the Hammers failed to bring the player.
However, according to reports, both West Ham and the player are ready to reopen the bidding war again. Currently, The Hammers squad is looking pretty strong but the midfield department is still looking a bit shoddy. Pedro Obiang and Mark Noble had a tough time to deal with the tenacity of the current tempo and diversity of the game and the addition of Carvalho will give the team an uplift.
Carvalho remains one of the most entrusted midfield enforcers of this generation and has built a reputation for his power football in the middle of the pitch. The Hammers got a taste of their own medicine in the opening game as they were thrashed 4-0 by Manchester United.
On pen and paper, United was pretty much stronger than them but the Hammers failed to pull the strings in the middle of the park and the addition of the Portuguese would certainly give Bilic a lot of options in this role.
Carvalho likes to rotate the play from the deep and will be an upgrade on Noble, who has been a trusted warrior for the Hammers. But Bilic has to do some reality checking and a move for the player makes sense.
The Sporting star has also been demanding a move to the Premier League and is very upset after talks broke down. He, however, hasn’t lost his motivation and is confident of reaching a deal in January when the winter transfer window opens. He is also being chased by a number of top clubs but given his playing style, he will be a hit at the London Stadium. Moreover, he is keen to have regular game time and Bilic will be able to offer him exactly that.
The 25-year-old is also very versatile and can ply his trade in the backline too if needed. The midfielder burst into the Portugal team in 2013 and has been a regular for them which speaks about his consistency and quality. So can he help West Ham back to the top?
