According to reports, Leicester City are now eyeing a move for Paris Saint-Germain’s Grzegorz Krychowiak as Chelsea edge closer than ever to land Danny Drinkwater from the Foxes. Aiming for the Polish international would be an audacious move by Leicester at all cost but he will be a definite upgrade over Drinkwater any day.
The midfield position has been a crisis position for Craig Shakespeare since taking over last season with the manager failing to find the right combination. With Drinkwater mostly out with injuries last season, Leicester haven’t seen the best of him since their 2015-16 title winning campaign.
The Foxes haven’t started the season in the best of ways either with just one win in three games as the Foxes go into the international break in the 15th position, and losing Drinkwater will further worsen the situation. However, Blues manager Antonio Conte has been desperate to get him since the beginning and the sale of Nemanja Matic to Manchester United has now made it all the more important.
Among the new arrivals, former Hull City centre half Harry Maguire has been most impactful for Shakespeare in the campaign so far. While Leicester has brought in the experienced Vicente Iborra from Sevilla, Krychowiak will be a real upgrade to their midfield that also contains Onyinye Ndidi, Daniel Amartey, Andy King and more.
The Polish international joined PSG from Sevilla last summer but has struggled to settle in his new surroundings so far, and with Adrien Rabiot and Marco Verratti ahead of him in the pecking order, he isn’t expected to make the cut. While Leicester have reportedly agreed to a deal worth £28 million for Drinkwater, Krychowiak isn’t expected to be below £40 million.
A defensive midfielder by nature, Krychowiak can play in the central defence with equal ease and at 186cm, shouldn’t be much bothered by the physicality in the Premier League.
An academy product of Polish side Stal Szczecin, Krychowiak moved to Arka Gdynia before Ligue 1 side FC Girondins Bordeaux in 2007. He wasted little time in reaching his peak and was already in the senior team for two years in 2009. Bordeaux decided to loan him out to Stade Reims and FC Nantes before Stade Reims bought him in 2012.
He has already played over 150 games for Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 sides becoming an established player and Sevilla got him two years later. He won two Europa Leagues with the La Liga outfit before PSG got him. But his PSG career is yet to take shape as he could play only 19 times last season. With Leicester City wanting him and World Cup year next, he is likely to make the move. So can help the Foxes back to their best?
