According to reports, Stevan Jovetic could be a target for Newcastle United in the last few days of the transfer window as Rafael Benitez goes for one last try in getting a quality forward after repeated failures over the summer. The Montenegro international has had a decent stint with La Liga side Sevilla last season with many European clubs vying for him.
The Mags had been chasing him for quite some time in the summer before the interest faded with no real deal materializing. However, the poor start to the domestic campaign has spurred the manager to look for an urgent reinforcement up front and with Jovetic’s place uncertain at Inter Milan, a deal is not entirely unlikely.
Having the likes of Dwight Gayle, Aleksandr Mitrovic, Joselu and Emmanuel Rivière was never enough for the Toon and things got further worsened when Dwight Gayle got injured. Benitez saw his side lose to Everton in the opening game, against Huddersfield Town in the second game week and if that humiliation wasn’t enough, they were soon ousted by Championship side Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup.
This was the first time in 27 years that the historic club has gone out in the second-round stage of the domestic cup, which indicates that the disruption at the administrative level between Rafael Benitez and the club owner has affected the side. The only way to lessen the ongoing unrest among the fans would be a statement making signing and Benitez is exactly trying that.
27-year-old Jovetic is undeniably a quality forward, who can make things happen up front from the simplest of chances. Playing alongside the likes of Samir Nasri and Steven N’Zonzi in Sevilla last season, the player scored a decent seven goals and provide five assists in 24 games. And after his previous stint in the Premier League, where he scored 11 goals and provided six assists in 44 games, he won’t need any time adapting to the style of the league.
An academy product of Serbian side FK Partizan Belgrade, Jovetic moved to Serie A side Fiorentina in 2009, where he really became a star. He spent four seasons with the Italian side playing 134 games, scoring 40 goals and assisting 21 times. His heroics led money rich Manchester City to buy him next and honestly, he hasn’t flourished as well as he did at Fiorentina.
He made a loan move to Inter Milan while he was at Etihad in 2015 before sealing the deal permanently last winter. However, his chances at Inter seem rare and the player is looking at clubs for regular chances.
