According to reports, Manchester United still have an interest in landing Wales international Gareth Bale. Following his underwhelming venture with Real Madrid and their pursuit of Kylian Mbappe, an exit for Bale looks to be on the cards sooner or later and United would definitely want to exploit this window of opportunity.
The Red Devils have been a long-term admirer of the winger even before Tottenham Hotspur managed to get him from Southampton. It was followed by a mammoth £107 million effort by the Manchester outfit later in 2013 when Bale yet again chose a different club over them, this time Real Madrid. Mourinho would hope they manage to land the enigmatic forward this time.
United have already brought in Romelu Lukaku in the centre forward’s role this summer and a wide man remains his top priority now. However, as has always been the case with the former Chelsea and Real Madrid manager, he prefers established names with a skyrocketing price tag rather than emerging talents with sparkling potential.
And his need for a winger has led him to the likes of Ivan Perisic and Gareth Bale. While the Inter Milan man has been a difficult target to land, they have once again put their sights on Bale. With Zinedine Zidane mulling over a move for the latest French sensation Kylian Mbappe, Bale’s position remains quite shaky.
While the likes of Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo’s tenures at Santiago Bernabeu are already coming to an end, Bale might see himself out of it earlier than that. The 28-year-old possesses a dangerous left-foot, which can find the back of the net from almost anywhere in the attacking third. And that blended with fearsome pace from the flanks make him one of the most desirable players to have in the squad.
Since joining Los Blancos from Spurs, the Welshman has scored a staggering 67 goals and provided 51 assists in 150 games. Hardly has any player had such an impact on a new club. However, Bale’s injury prone nature could be a cause of worry for United. It has further aggravated since 2015. Bale has missed 44 games over the past two seasons in Real, however, whenever he has played he has been incredible.
United have Jese Lingard on the wings, who has come up well from the academy ranks but with Mourinho targeting almost everything in the next few years, he won’t settle for anything but the best. The other available options of Anthony Martial and Henrikh Mkhitaryan have proved immensely effective for opponents to handle and the addition of Bale could make them world class.
