Tottenham Hotspur remains the most consistent team in the Premier League since the start of the 2015-16 season but they have nothing to show for, having finished in the second place, without winning any trophy, in the recent campaign. So Mauricio Pochettino is looking to add some quality players to the squad to try and help them take the next step and one player constantly linked with a move to London is Domenico Berardi.
Sassuolo’s director general, Giovanni Carnevali has recently revealed that he wants the player to stay put, like he did in the previous summer, amid interests from some of the top clubs in Europe. However, it is understood that the Spurs are trying hard to convince him to leave Italy to join the English side.
A product of the Cosenza Academy in Italy, Berardi is an attacking winger who knows his way to goal. At just 22, he has already established himself as one of the best finishers in Italy and has been in tremendous form for Sassuolo picking up ten goals and 11 assists in 25 games in all competitions for the club.
He has also represented the Italy U21 side 21 times and is not too far away from a national team call-up. He already has 148 Serie A appearances to his name and is a player destined for great things in the future.
Though not the first choice for the Serie A outfit, Berardi is an excellent passer with a decent vision that helps him break defences apart. He is a genuine goal scorer, who is a handful from dead ball situations and at just 22, is still learning the game.
Though he is not strong, and not too effective with his defensive duties, he is a smart player who knows how to get himself on the scoresheet and it is not too hard to see him cement a place in the first team for the Spurs.
Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen were the best options for Pochettino to play just behind Harry Kane last season. While the manager will still search for a replacement for Kane, adding Berardi to their lineup will give them a chance to use a 4-2-3-1 system, which will reduce the responsibilities of most of the players in attack.
The likes of Heung-Min Son, Vincent Janssen and Eric Lamela will surely fight for his spot but if Berardi shows enough promise, he could easily end up as a first team star for Pochettino, as he fits most attributes that the Argentine needs in his players. But do you think he is the right man for the Spurs?
