Tottenham Hotspur’s chances of getting Max Meyer have brightened after the German playmaker has reportedly turned down a new offer to extend his stay with Schalke. The Spurs are believed to have expressed interest in the attacking midfielder and they might soon be able to pursue his signature.
Spurs ended the season in exciting fashion as they have now finished in the top four in the Premier League for two years in a row. But the disappointment of not getting to the ultimate position, missing out on the Premier League title by a whisker, has been haunting Mauricio Pochettino and he will leave no stones unturned in the next season to give the North London side a rare taste of silverware.
With the likes of Dele Alli, Harry Kane and Christian Eriksen already in the side, the addition of Meyer will see a different Spurs altogether in the next season. A product of the Schalke youth setup, Meyer has played over 160 games for the senior side but had a very quiet season compared to the last one.
Despite managing 27 appearances in the Bundesliga the 21-year-old has found the net only once. However, it doesn’t reflect his form as he is capable of much more with his talent and skills.
Meyer has only a year left to run on his contract and if the German side remains adamant to keep him, they will have to face losing him for free in 2018. Earlier it seemed that Spurs would have to splash around £45m for his services but with only one year left on his current deal Schalke might choose to cash in on the player at a lower price rather losing him for free.
A future star of the German national team, Meyer has already made his debut for ‘Die Mannschaft’ and has featured in four matches in which he also found the target once. Basically an attacking midfielder, Meyer is equally comfortable on the either flanks and would hand Pochettino a number of possibilities to experiment with.
He will also have the chance to hone his skills under the tutelage of Pochettino as the Argentine gaffer is an avid admirer of young talents as we have seen in the rise of Dele Alli under his guidance, which is pretty fascinating. Meyer could become a crucial part of the current Spurs lineup if he can continue his progress in England too. But he is the right man to take them to glory?
