According to the Sun, Chelsea are considering a surprising move for rival Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher. Though the Blues have capable shot-stoppers at their disposal, they wouldn’t mind a change between the sticks.
Caoimhin Kelleher has immense potential
Caoimhin Kelleher has been associated with Liverpool since 2015. He made his senior team debut in 2019 and has been climbing up the ladders since then. He is currently serving the club as the backup option for Alisson Becker.
Kelleher has done really well whenever he got to feature in the absence of the Brazilian goalkeeper. The former has featured in eight games in the ongoing campaign so far. In those many outings, he has managed to keep four clean sheets while leaking five goals.
The Irish goalkeeper is always quick to come off his line and commands his area well. He has strong hands and quick reflexes to block shots from all ranges. He is also comfortable with the ball at his feet and has good penalty-saving abilities.
Does Chelsea need another goalkeeper?
Chelsea’s boss Enzo Maresca has preferred Robert Sanchez as the first-choice goalkeeper this season. While the latter has done decently well, he hasn’t been fully convincing so far. Notably, the club also has Filip Jorgensen as an option.
Despite these facts, the Blues are surprisingly considering signing Caoimhin Kelleher. While there is no doubt over the shot-stopper’s abilities, the real question is whether they really need him or not.
Chelsea already have notable names and investing in another goalkeeper doesn’t make enough sense at all. While Killeher will cost around £ 35 million, the club should formulate investing that sum in other areas to strengthen the overall unit.
Moreover, Liverpool might not be comfortable selling their hot property to their direct rivals. The chances of seeing this deal taking place are almost negligible.
