In a recent report, Quotidiano Sportivo revealed that Newcastle United are showing interest in Toulouse defender Logan Costa this summer. It has been claimed that the Magpies have asked about the Cape Verde international ahead of a potential move for him this month.
Costa’s Impressive Form In Ligue 1 Last Season
Costa had a solid season at the French club after he put in a string of dominant displays at the heart of their backline. The 23-year-old scored one goal and picked up one assist in 38 matches for Toulouse in the previous campaign across all competitions.
The Cape Verde sensation gave a good account of himself when defending inside his half as he averaged 1.3 tackles, 0.7 interceptions and 3.8 clearances per game in Ligue 1 football. He was even excellent when distributing the ball from the back based on his pass success rate of 84.1% in the top tier of French football (stats via whoscored).
Costa is under contract at Toulouse until the summer of 2026 which could make it difficult for Newcastle United to snap him up on a cut-price deal in this transfer window.
Should Newcastle United Boss Eddie Howe Get Costa On Board?
Costa is a solid tackler of the ball and can sense the danger to make some timely interceptions for his side on the defensive third of the pitch. He usually clears his lines when the opposition are on the offensive and excels at playing his way out from the back.
The Cape Verde international can also use his strong 1.90m frame to win his fair share of 50-50 duels in the air. However, there are some concerns over whether he would be able to handle the high intensity of Premier League football if the Magpies manage to get a deal done for him this summer.
Costa would add more bite and steel to Newcastle boss Eddie Howe’s defence. He is more than capable of challenging for a regular first-team spot at St. James’ Park next season. At 23, the future is quite bright for the Toulouse defensive ace as long as he continues to improve with each year. Hence, the Tyneside club should focus on getting him on board this month.
