On the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, journalist Pete O’Rourke mentioned that Newcastle United are eager to sign Everton forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin this summer. It has been stated that the Magpies are keen on acquiring the services of the English striker this off-season.
Calvert-Lewin’s Difficult Campaign At Goodison Park
Calvert-Lewin had a tough campaign at the Merseyside club as he struggled to be consistent for them in the Premier League. The English centre-forward scored eight goals and earned three assists in 38 appearances for Everton last season in all competitions.
The 27-year-old caught the eye at times and did well to average 2.3 shots, 0.6 key passes and 0.4 dribbles per game in the Premier League. However, he lacked quality when distributing the ball in the final third based on his pass success rate of 56.9% in the English top tier (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at Goodison Park will run out at the end of next season which could make it difficult for the Magpies to snap him up on the cheap before the end of this transfer window.
What Will Calvert-Lewin Bring To Newcastle United?
Calvert-Lewin excels at finding a yard of space for himself to get some strikes in at goal. He can be a streaky goal-getter in front of the opposition goal and can create the odd chance for his teammates in the final third.
The English forward can even use his strong 1.89m frame to dominate the opposition centre-backs in the air. However, he has to find a way to improve his link-up play up top. At the moment, Calvert-Lewin can benefit from a change of scenery in search of greener pastures.
The English talent is good enough to serve as a decent, rotational piece in Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe’s match-day squad next season. At 27, Calvert-Lewin is entering his peak which makes him a decent choice for the Magpies to pursue this off-season.
We can expect him to bring more firepower to Newcastle’s frontline. With all things considered, Howe would be wise to bring Calvert-Lewin to St. James’ Park before the end of this transfer window as he could help the Tyneside club compete across all fronts in the coming years.
