Liverpool have established contact with Real Madrid defender Ferland Mendy’s entourage, according to Give Me Sport. The Premier League club are considering signing him in the summer transfer window to add depth to their defensive unit.
Ferland Mendy is a talented left-back
Ferland Mendy joined Real Madrid from Lyon in the summer of 2019 for a reported fee of €48 million. Since then, he has been an integral part of the side. However, he has had his own struggle with injuries and even his defensive aspects haven’t been as good as the Whites had interpreted.
The 28-year-old has featured in 32 games this season, netting once. He is averaging 0.8 tackles, 0.6 interceptions, and 1 clearance per game. He is good at holding onto the ball, passing and maintaining high intensity throughout the game (stats via whoscored).
However, Mendy’s tackling ability often comes under the radar. He is also not very accurate with his crosses, leading to the underutilization of a position. His current contract with Real Madrid runs until the end of the next season.
A good addition for Liverpool
Liverpool’s alleged interest in Ferland Mendy is understandable as Andrew Robertson is on the wrong side of 30. Kostas Tsimikas, on the other hand, cannot be trusted completely. Hence, signing an experienced left full-back is necessary.
However, the transfer will depend upon a lot of factors. Real Madrid won’t let the French player leave that easily. The Spanish side will give the green light only if they manage to sign Alphonso Davies in the summer. To add to the problems, even Arsenal and Manchester United are keeping tabs on the defender.
From the player’s point of view, Mendy should be willing to make the switch. If the Canadian defender arrives, he will get demoted and play for much fewer minutes next season. For the Reds, he can emerge as a reliable name and prove his worth in the English league.
