Chelsea are considering selling Conor Gallagher due to financial concerns. The squad has spent a lot of money since Clearlake Capital took over. This excessive expenditure puts them at risk of violating financial regulations. Other teams, including Tottenham, are interested in Gallagher.
Conor Gallagher to leave Chelsea?
Conor Gallagher has not only come up through the ranks at Cobham and went through several loan spells but also served as the captain for his local club, Chelsea. The 23-year-old is a favorite of manager Mauricio Pochettino and has been a consistent starter in all available Premier League games this season. He plays a crucial role in a young team coping with the challenges of signing 25 players for over £1 billion in just over 18 months, as the Todd Boehly-led team strategically manages their spending.
They will also be aware that, besides Gallagher, they have other players like Moisés Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez, Roméo Lavia, Cole Palmer, Lesley Ugochukwu, Carney Chukwuemeka, and Andrey Santos who can play in the three midfield positions. Gallagher is the only one from this group who came through the academy, so if he is sold, the entire amount received can be counted as profit.
The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards talked on the Transfer Gossip Daily podcast about Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher, who is rumored to be moving to Tottenham in the coming month.
“A manager doesn’t give the armband to a 23-year-old for no reason. He’s certainly not giving him the armband to try and sell him. Now this just is indicative of where Chelsea are, I think. I think they are looking at what’s happened to Nottingham Forest. They are looking at what’s happened to Everton. They are looking at clubs like Newcastle, Aston Villa, West Ham, worrying about profit and sustainability rules,” Edwards said.

Even though several of Chelsea’s signings have underperformed, it makes no sense to let Gallagher go this month due to financial reasons. However, given previous decisions at Stamford Bridge, a departure in January may not be altogether surprising.
