Manchester United will welcome Newcastle United at Old Trafford this Wednesday night as they look to pick up a good result at home in the EFL Cup. The Red Devils suffered a dismal 3-0 defeat at the hands of Manchester City last weekend, so they would be keen on securing a win in this cup game at the Theatre of Dreams.
Erik ten Hag will set his men up in a 4-2-3-1 formation and is expected to make a number of tweaks to his first XI for this game. Raphael Varane, Alejandro Garnacho and Antony will all play from the start of this contest in the EFL Cup.
4-2-3-1 Manchester United Predicted Lineup To Face Newcastle United
Defence
Andre Onana will operate as Ten Hag’s first-choice keeper despite shipping in three goals in his last domestic outing. Raphael Varane could get a chance to impress alongside Harry Maguire at the centre of Man United’s backline as they try to keep the Newcastle attackers at bay during the 90 minutes.
Diogo Dalot will fill in as the right-back while Sergio Reguilon looks to catch the eye on the other flank as the left-back. Both of them would look to get forward and support the front players at every chance they get.
Jonny Evans will be rested on the bench as he provides cover for the centre-back positions.
Midfield
Christian Eriksen and Sofyan Amrabat will anchor the midfield for Man United as they try to make life difficult for the opposition in the middle of the park.
The talented trio of Alejandro Garnacho, Mason Mount and Antony will play just ahead of them as part of ten Hag’s attack. Both Garnacho and Antony would need to stretch the Newcastle defence if Man United want to secure a win in this midweek game.
Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes will have to settle for a place on the bench and might come on to make an impact in the final quarter of the match if required.
Attack
Rasmus Hojlund will spearhead Man United’s attack in the attacking third of the field. He failed to register a goal against Man City, so this EFL Cup game could be a good opportunity for him to find the back of the net.
Anthony Martial will make up the numbers on the bench.
