In a recent report, The Sun claimed that Arsenal are set to rival Tottenham Hotspur for Aston Villa star Douglas Luiz this summer. It has been revealed that the Gunners are eyeing a move to bring the Brazilian midfielder to Villa Park in this off-season.
Luiz’s Decent Run Of Form At Villa Park
Luiz enjoyed a solid season at the West Midlands club after he put in a run of impressive displays at the centre of the park. The 25-year-old registered seven goals and six assists in 40 matches for the Villans in the previous campaign across all competitions.
The Rio de Janeiro-born talent was a decent performer in both halves as he averaged 2.0 tackles, 1.1 interceptions, 0.6 clearances, 0.9 shots, 1.2 key passes and 0.6 dribbles per 90 minutes in the Premier League. He has even been accurate when distributing possession from midfield based on his pass success rate of 86.4% in the English top flight (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at Aston Villa is set to run out in the summer of 2026. Hence, it would be difficult for the Gunners to arrange a cut-price move for him in this ongoing transfer window.
Is Douglas Luiz A Good Option For Arsenal Boss Mikel Arteta?
Luiz is a good tackler of the ball and can sense the danger quickly to secure the ball back for his team in the middle of the park. He doesn’t hesitate to clear the danger when needed and is a tidy passer of the ball.
The Brazilian midfield ace has got the vision to create some decent plays for his teammates in the opponent’s half. He can even strike the ball well from long range but needs to make more runs toward the opposition penalty box.
Someone with Luiz’s quality will be a welcome acquisition for Arsenal as Mikel Arteta looks to build a strong squad for the future.
At 25, the Aston Villa star has his peak years ahead of him which makes him a great option for the Gunners to pursue during this summer transfer period. He has got a wealth of Premier League experience under his belt and could help the North London club compete for some major trophies in the coming years.
