In a recent report, The Daily Mail stated that Newcastle United are keeping tabs on Coventry City forward Viktor Gyokeres. It has been claimed that the Magpies are eyeing a move to bring the Swedish striker to St. James’ Park this summer.
Gyokeres’ Impressive Form In English Football This Season
Gyokeres enjoyed a fantastic campaign with the Sky Blues as he produced a series of productive performances for them in the final third. However, the Swedish striker failed to help his team earn a promotion back to the Premier League after Coventry City lost to Luton Town on penalties (5-6) in the Promotion Play-offs final recently.
The 24-year-old has banged in 22 goals and picked up 12 assists in 50 appearances for his current employers this season across all fronts. Gyokeres has led the line well by 2.9 shots, 1.9 key passes and 2.1 dribbles per game in the EFL Championship. He has been careless when linking up play with others around him in the final third as he has made just 68.6% of his attempted passes in the second tier of English football (stats via whoscored).
The Sweden international is under contract at Coventry until the summer of 2024. Thus, the Magpies could land him on the cheap in this off-season.
Is Gyokeres A Decent Choice For Newcastle United?
Gyokeres excels at finding space for himself to get a few strikes in at goal. He is a decent finisher in the final third when he is playing well on the pitch.
The Swedish striker can also create some decent plays for his teammates in the opponent’s half and is a good dribbler with the ball as well. Standing at 1.87m, he can use his strong frame to hold possession up for his team but needs to work on improving his link-up play if he intends to taste success at the highest level.
We can expect Gyokeres to add more depth to Newcastle boss Eddie Howe’s attack. He has what it takes to challenge Callum Wilson for a regular starting spot at St. James’ Park next season as long as he can make a smooth transition to Premier League football.
Gyokores could prove to be a great choice for the Magpies to consider this summer as he will no doubt help them challenge across all competitions in the coming seasons.
