The transfer window is finally open and expect a lot of business to be done even though player fees are usually inflated in the winter. Newcastle, who have suffered a dip in form of late, are likely to add a few fresh faces to ensure they finish in the top two spots in the Championship and secure a direct promotion to the top tier.
The Magpies have suffered in the absence of Jonjo Shelvey. It’s a bit of a surprise that one player can have such a massive influence. The game against Blackburn showed that they need someone with the same level of influence in the midfield as the likes of Colback, Hayden and Tioté simply don’t have the ability of Shelvey.
Newcastle have been linked with a few loan moves. The likes of Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Tom Cleverley were thrown in by the press but more recently, Manchester City’s Fabian Delph has come into the transfer picture as well.
Delph, who joined Manchester City for a fee of £8million from Aston Villa, has had an injury-ravaged spell in the blue half of Manchester. He had a brilliant spell at Aston Villa and days after affirming he’ll captain the team for the new season, he joined Man City last summer to the surprise and anger of the fans.
Delph rose to prominence at Leeds United but they were in no position to retain their better players and he ended up moving to Aston Villa in 2009. He had a few loan spells at Elland Road to continue his development and it helped him hit the ground running at Aston Villa.
A versatile midfielder, Delph is primarily known for his darting runs from the deeper midfield areas thanks to his incredible burst of pace. He can be played in the defensive role as his tackling and incepting abilities are pretty strong thanks to his mobile nature. At 27, he’ll be entering the peak of his athletic career and need game time to get his stalled career back up.
Newcastle could approach Manchester City for a loan move but considering they will be missing Fernandinho for four more games and Ilkay Gundogan to injury for the rest of the season, it might not be a straight forward deal.
Delph recently returned to training after an injury layoff and will take some time to get back to his best. Despite that, he could be a pretty good option to the Magpies.
