In a recent interview with Real Madrid’s official website, Thibaut Courtois heaped praise on Liverpool player Alisson Becker after his team’s win over the Reds in the UEFA Champions League. Courtois said,
“It was a good performance from us. They tried to create chances, Alisson made a series of brilliant saves and until our goal came, we knew they were still in the game.
“Once we got that goal, the game cooled off a bit and we knew we were going to qualify.”
Alisson was at his best for the Merseyside club in that European game as he made seven solid saves to restrict Real Madrid to just one goal at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.
Hence, Courtois is right with his assessment of the Liverpool keeper and has every reason to be optimistic about Los Blancos’ chances of retaining their Champions League crown this season.
How Has Thibaut Courtois Fared For Real Madrid This Season?
Courtois has managed to produce a run of solid performances in goal for Real Madrid over the course of this campaign. He has featured in 31 matches for Los Blancos this season, conceding 30 goals and earning ten clean sheets in the process across all fronts.
The Belgian international has done well to average 0.4 clearances and 3.9 long balls per game in La Liga. He has also taken care of the ball when distributing possession from the back, as evidenced by his pass completion rate of 82.6% in the top tier of Spanish football (stats via whoscored).
Courtois has already won the Champions League once and the La Liga title twice during his time at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium. He remains an integral member of Carlo Ancelotti’s first XI and could lead the Madrid giants to even more success before the end of this campaign.
Now that Courtois’ Real Madrid has beaten Alisson‘s Liverpool two times in a row, it’s safe to assume that he is leading the race to be the best active goalkeeper in world football right now.
