In a recent report, Bild (subscription required) mentioned that Liverpool are eyeing a move for Hannover keeper Ron-Robert Zieler. It is understood that the Reds have identified the German custodian as an ideal replacement for Adrian who is entering the last stage of his playing career at Anfield.
Zieler’s Impressive Season In Germany So Far
Zieler is having a decent season in German football as he has managed to put in a few impressive displays in goal for Hannover. The 33-year-old has been involved in 15 matches for the German club this season, conceding 17 goals and securing six clean sheets across all fronts.
The German talent has caught the eye by averaging 1.0 clearances and 9.8 long balls per game in the Bundesliga 2. However, he has to find a way to improve his ball distribution after completing just 65.1% of his attempted passes in the German second tier (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at Hannover will expire at the end of this campaign. Hence, Liverpool might have a good shot at landing him on the cheap this January or signing him as a free agent next summer.
Is Zieler A Good Choice For Liverpool Head Coach Jurgen Klopp?
Zieler can be a safe pair of hands in between the posts when he is playing regularly and with confidence on the pitch. He has got decent reflexes that help make a few solid saves at the back. The German sensation has often gone long with his ball distribution and doesn’t hesitate to come out of his lines to clear the danger when needed.
Zieler has what it takes to be an ideal understudy to Alisson Becker at Anfield if Liverpool manage to get him on board during the winter transfer period or at the end of this campaign.
At 33, Zieler might still have a few good years left in him to play at a high level. Someone with the German keeper’s experience would be a good candidate to feature for the Reds in the domestic cup competitions over the next few seasons.
All in all, Zieler will be a decent choice for Jurgen Klopp to consider when the transfer window reopens at the start of next year. Furthermore, he would be a good presence in the Merseyside club’s dressing room as he will be able to help get the best out of the younger players because of his previous experience in English and German football.
