If a report from Spanish outlet Sport is believed to be true, Liverpool are keeping close tabs on Borussia Dortmund teenager Youssoufa Moukoko. Barcelona are also keen on securing his services next year, however, the Reds are tipped to be leading the race with the German’s current deal set to expire by the closure of the ongoing campaign.
The 17-year-old attacker spent a couple of years in the academy ranks of FC St. Pauli before joining Borussia Dortmund’s youth setup. He has always been ahead of the other youngsters who belong to the same age group and his Bundesliga debut a couple of years ago made him the youngest player ever to play in the League. It was a day after turning sixteen when he replaced Erling Haaland against Hertha BSC and the young sensation is now emerging as the Norwegian’s natural successor at Signal Iduna Park.
Moukoko also became the youngest-ever Champions League footballer a few days later and then went on to be the youngest scorer of the Bundesliga when he fired in against Union Berlin back in December 2020. He has broken many a record already this early in his career and the heavyweights across Europe are circling like vultures to have him in their squad.
Why Liverpool Must Rope In The Teenager
Meanwhile, Liverpool are struggling in Premier League due to form and fitness concerns. They allowed Sadio Mane to join Bayern Munich but roped in Darwin Nunez from Benfica to restore parity high up the pitch. Having said that, the Merseysiders decided not to replace Divock Origi and Takumi Minamino in the attacking third and the long-term injuries to Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota have left Jurgen Klopp with no choice but to rely on Mohamed Salah, and Roberto Firmino as well as Nunez twice a week.
The dearth of depth upfront has cost them severely so far this term and the young options like Fabio Carvalho and Harvey Elliott are lacking the experience, composure and directness to make a difference in Premier League encounters. Moukoko might be younger than both of them, but he has got ample exposure already against high-profile opponents. He is enjoying a blistering run with 4 goals and 5 assists in 16 appearances across competitions and the sky is the limit for the German youth international irrespective of his next career move.
Klopp, being the former BVB boss, holds a high reputation back in his homeland, but the gametime would be more regular at Dortmund if Moukoko decides to extend his stay by penning a new contract. It remains to be seen how it goes over the next few months.
