According to Birmingham World, Aston Villa are being linked to Mauricio Pochettino who could replace Steven Gerrard should the Villans decide to bring forth a change in the managerial position. The Lions currently find themselves in the 16th position hovering right above the relegation zones which has left the higher ups at Villa to wonder if Gerrard is the right fit amid growing pressure.
Should Gerrard Be Replaced At Villa Park?
Pressure has been mounting on Steven Gerrard after the disappointing 2-0 defeat of the Midlands outfit at the hands of Chelsea in the last time out. They have only managed to secure nine points from 10 matches so far which is a really slow start to this campaign.
If they do not bounce back and drastically improve their performances to rack up wins over the coming weeks, it would be no surprise if Aston Villa struggle to finish even in the mid table positions.
However, the fixtures this week remain pivotal in Steven Gerrard’s managing career as he gears up to face Fulham and Brentford. Should Villa fail to perform in the next two fixtures Gerrard’s sacking will be inevitable.
What Could Pochettino Bring To Aston Villa?
The former Argentina centre-back managed Tottenham Hotspur from 2014- 2019 guiding them to the UEFA Champions League during his time at North London. He also helped Spurs finish second place securing 84 points in the 2016-17 season, eventually leading them to the Champions League final in 2019 which they lost to Liverpool.
He was then dismissed from Tottenham and later hired by Paris Saint-Germain on an 18-month contract which saw him help the French giants reach the UCL semi-finals in 2020-21. However, PSG lost to Manchester City in both legs and finished second to Lille in Ligue 1. The following year, Pochettino did well to help the Parisians lift the domestic title but in 2022, it was announced that he was parting ways with Paris.
He has had a brilliant managing career even though he hasn’t won major European trophies with the clubs he has managed. However, he does have the experience to help Aston Villa recover from a series of poor performances over the weeks. He could certainly make the necessary changes to improve Villa’s overall performance in the Premier League to help them achieve their goals.
