According to a report from The Guardian, West Ham United have secured their fifth signing of the summer as they agree on a transfer fee for Lille’s starlet Amadou Onana. It was understood that the French outfit valued their youngster at nearly £50 million but the transfer sum involved is believed to be worth £33.5 million including add-ons.
Onana’s Impressive Numbers For Lille Last Season
Onana has produced some dominant displays in the holding positions of the midfield mostly coming off the bench to create an impact. He managed to find the back of the net on one occasion appearing in 40 matches in his campaign last season.
The Senegal-born talent has held his ground on the defensive end performing consistently after averaging 1.5 tackles, 0.9 interceptions, 0.6 clearances and 0.5 key passes per game in Ligue 1. He was also tidy with his ball distribution as he completed 83.3% of his attempted passes in the French top-flight (stats via whoscored).
Good Move From West Ham United Boss David Moyes?
Onana is a defensive powerhouse; he would bring more competition to the holding positions in the central areas of the pitch with Declan Rice, Tomas Soucek and Flynn Downes set to fight for minutes in the next campaign.
David Moyes had to bring in more defensive cover in the midfield to strengthen the squad ahead of the next season and has done well to bring in reinforcements for the problem areas. Moyes would most likely utilise the new faces to go on the run for a top-four place in the Premier League
The Hammers have already secured four signings this summer with the East London club spending over £80 million, and with Onana’s arrival, they would cross the £100 million mark. They have brought in promising prospects to London Stadium who can grow over the coming seasons, and the Belgium midfielder adds to the list of successful signings.
