In a recent report, Sport provided an update on Barcelona and their pursuit of Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta. It is understood that the Blues are unwilling to sell their prized asset this summer despite Barca’s interest in recruiting him.
Azpilicueta’s Solid Run Of Form In English Football
Azpilicueta had a solid campaign at Stamford Bridge as he continued to serve as a key member of Thomas Tuchel’s defence. The 32-year-old found the back of the net three times and picked up three assists in 47 matches for the Blues last season in all competitions.
The 40-time Spain international did well to average 1.9 tackles, 0.9 interceptions and 2.3 clearances per 90 minutes in Premier League football. He was even accurate when distributing the ball from the back, as evidenced by his pass success rate of 85.7% in the top tier of English football (stats via whoscored).
Chelsea Are Reluctant To Sell Azpilicueta: Big Blow For Barcelona?
Azpilicueta remains a solid defender at the back as he can time his tackles well to earn the ball back for his side inside his half. He usually clears the danger when the opposition are on the front foot and can even create a few decent chances for his teammates in the final third. Azpilicueta is primarily a right-back but can also fill in as a left-back or as a central defender if his manager needs him to do so.
However, father time is slowly catching up with the Spaniard’s game. Furthermore, he has just got a year remaining in his Chelsea contract. Therefore, Barca had every reason to be optimistic about their chances of landing Azpilicueta for a cut-price fee this summer.
At 32, the Premier League talent might still have a few good years left in him to play at a high level. However, Barcelona‘s recent pursuit of Sevilla’s Jules Kounde could derail their chances of acquiring the Spaniard’s services this summer.
Chelsea’s reluctance to let Azpilicueta leave will no doubt be a big blow for the Catalan outfit as Xavi would have definitely benefitted from recruiting someone of Azpilicueta’s experience and versatility during this summer transfer window.
